Jarrow Roofing BCA 4 Ryton & Crawcrook Albion 0
Ebac Northern League Division 2
Boldon C.A. Sports Ground
Jarrow Roofing made it six Ebac Northern League Division 2 wins on the bounce as they overcame a stubborn Ryton and Crawcrook Albion side 4-0 at the Boldon C.A. Sports Ground on Saturday afternoon, writes Andy Hudson.
The Roofers, forced in to a change with Stevie Graham missing from the midfield that brought a recall for Ian Dixon and Danny Carson pushed forward into midfield, took an early grip on the game, much of which was played out inside the Ryton half with the league’s basement club dropping further and further back. Yet despite the early pressure, Roofing were unable to create any real chances on Kevin Quigley’s goal – though more through over elaboration in and around the Ryton box then any resolute defending on the visitors’ behalf.
That it was Ryton who had the first real chance on goal came as no surprise considering how much Roofing failed to take advantage of their domination. Just after the half hour Scott Canham’s header put Matthew Fothergill through on goal, but with Andy Hunter rushing out, the forward elected to try and deliver a cute lob over the goalkeeper only for Hunter’s relaxes to win the battle as he thrust an arm upwards to block the shot.
Minutes later came Roofing’s first real chance when Liam McBryde played in Andy Appleby and after going outside his marker, his left-footed shot was planed over the bar by Quigley. From Carson’s corner Quigley then saved well from Dan Kirkup’s thumping header and then two minutes later the Ryton ‘keeper pulled off another stop from Paul Gardiner when the Roofing midfielder was played in one-on-one.
Roofing were well on top by this stage and three minutes later, after 41 minutes of the half and after good work involving McBryde and Stuart Nicholson, Gardiner controlled the cross from the latter being pulling wide of his marker inside the box and hitting a shot past Quigley that Appleby converted from a yard out and in an offside position.
It wouldn’t take long for Gardiner to get the breakthrough, however.
Seconds later McBryde played the ball out wide to Nicholson again. This time the cross was higher and Gardiner ghosted in at the back post to head past Quigley to give the Roofers a half-time lead.
The Roofers doubled their lead five minutes after the turn around. McBryde won a header in a central position and Appleby was pushed from behind when he took the ball on his chest. The striker picked himself straight back up and quickly played the ball out wide to Nicholson on the left who teased his way inside before floating a cross to the back post for McBryde to clinically finish past Quigley to grab his seventh goal in four games.
With Corey Barnes rampaging down the right wing and delivering a series of threatening crosses into the box, Ryton were on the ropes and shaky. Yet Quigley was keeping the score down, no more so than when a fan static ball in from Barnes saw McBryde climb the highest in the box and plant a firm header towards goal that smashed into the face of the Ryton ‘keeper to go out for a corner.
On 67 minutes Roofing grabbed their third goal of the game when Kirkup moved forward and played the ball inside to Carson who turned towards goal before hitting a swerving, dipping shot that beat Quigley.
Four minutes later and Appleby grabbed his first goal since his brace against Tow Law on February 4th – the game that kickstarted the six-match winning run. Again it was Barnes who caused trouble down the right and his low ball into the six-yard box was converted by Appleby at the front post to wrap up the scoring.
Gardiner almost made it five as the game entered the closing stages, but again Quigley saved when the midfielder was in one-on-one.
The win keeps Roofing in second place in the table with all of the top four winning – and with those same teams the top four form teams in the league, it looks like the promotion race will go to the wire with North Shields still five points clear, being chased by the Roofers, West Allotment Celtic and Seaham Red Star, and with all four teams in midweek action.
