Jarrow Roofing clinched all three points as their injury-ravaged squad came away from Penrith as 2-1 winners and get their Northern League Division 1 tally off and running for the season.

Joint-managers Richie McLoughlin and Mark Collingwood travelled across the A69 with just 12 available players but it didn’t take long for the South Tynesiders to take the lead, though that happened amidst confusing circumstances.

Seven minutes into the game, Shaun Vipond powered forward and slipped the ball through to Olly Martin. The teenager finished well into the centre of the goal but the ball rebounded off the board behind the net and bounced back out of the goal.

With the assistant referee signalling that the ball had went wide, the referee eventually gave the goal after long deliberation.

It was Martin’s first goal in Roofing colours after joining in the summer having spent last season playing Wearside League football for South Shields Reserves.

Penrith grabbed an equaliser on the quarter-hour mark when Charlie Bowman managed to turn in from a corner.

The Roofers made a half-time substitute with Daley Clarke, signed on earlier in the day from Hebburn Town Reserves, coming on for Tommy Bailey and Roofing secured victory with 20 minutes remaining.

Ethan Wood evaded a number of tackles as he pushed forward before being stopped by a defender. With the ball heading out for a corner, the Penrith goalkeeper scrambled across to try and prevent it.

However, his clearance dropped to Davey Palmer who curled the ball into the unguarded goal from 30-yards out.

Roofing face a slightly shorter trip on Saturday as they head to the Nissan Sports Complex to face Washington. And despite picking up the victory, McLoughlin and Collingwood will be hopefully that some of the seven missing players from the game are able to make a return to the squad.
