Jarrow Roofing and Billingham Synthonia played out a draw at Boldon as the visitors were gifted a penalty to cancel out Dennis Knight’s wonder-freekick and secure their first point of the season.
The game opened with Roofing on the front-foot and the Synners defence struggling to cope with Knight, returning to the Roofing team following an injury layoff.
However, the Roofers were unable to create any meaningful chances for Knight and his strike partner Olly Martin, with the home side instead relying on the strong running of the pair to cause trouble, or on long range efforts such as Davey Palmer’s 30-yard effort which was well tipped away by Liam Gibbs.
Knight was being marked closely by the Synners defence and just after the half hour mark, was brought down just inside the visitor’s half.
Picking himself up and noticing Gibbs had strayed a touch too far from his line, Knight drove in a sublime free-kick that flew over the keeper and into the net to give Roofing the lead.
Though with little real danger in the first half on their own goal, Roofing hit the self-destruct button seconds from the halftime whistle.
Lewis Wood hit a centre from the left and with the ball dropping just behind Callam Hassan, inside the Roofing box but with an almighty challenge in trying to bring the ball under control, turn and get a shot away, Anth Myers inexplicably went to ground.
Down went the towering Synners forward, and despite the protests from Roofing that there had been no contact, the referee, David Carr, pointed to the spot highlighting that sufficient contact had been made.
Synners’ captain Tom Seaton stepped up and stroked the ball into the bottom left corner to bring his side level and score his club’s first league goal of the season in their sixth game.
The visitors came into the game more in the second half, yet it would not be until two minutes from the end of the game that they managed to get their only shot on target, the penalty aside. Then Shaun Newbrook had a routine save to make from a long-range shot.
Yet Roofing huffed and puffed in the second half, unable to break down the stubborn Synners defence.
Ross Toward went close when his deep cross clipped the top of the bar while skipper Shaun Vipond headed over following a late run into the box to meet a right-sided cross.
Roofing’s woes continue, though a chink of light has started to flow through with the slow return of players from injury, as well as a solid debut from Lewis Walton who was signed from Conference North side Darlington ahead of the game.
Next up for the Roofers is a visit to Coach Lane on Wednesday night as they face Team Northumbria in a Northern League Division 1 clash.
