Goals from Dan Kirkup and Olly Martin helped Roofing secure a 2-1 victory over Northern Alliance champions Killingworth Town in a pre-season friendly at Harton Technical College.
Killy arrived on South Tyneside with a number of Roofing connections involved in their team, managed by former Roofer Dean Nicholson, with both Chris Tate and Scott Bamborough lining up in midfield while Dan Regan was between the sticks for the team that romped to the Alliance title last season and have aims for promotion to the Northern League this time around.
In a game where it quickly became evident that minutes in the legs was important to both, Roofing took the lead midway through the first half when Dennis Knight’s corner was headed down at the back post by Daryll Donnelly with Dan Kirkup on hand to steer the ball past Regan.
Killy drew level just before the break when a left wing cross was met by a flicked header from Tate that gave Shaun Newbrook no chance in the Roofing goal.
However, soon after the restart, Olly Martin opened his account for the Roofers with a fine finish from inside the box, pinging the ball into the net and giving his team another pre-season victory following three successive wins in the Tyne & Wear LGV Summer Cup and a 3-0 win at Heaton Stannington.
Next up for Roofing is a trip to Northern League Division Two side Alnwick Town on Saturday for a 2pm kick-off.
