Jarrow Roofing supremo Richie McLoughlin has lamented his team’s luck as they prepare for a Durham Challenge Cup clash against South Shields.
The Roofers were on the receiving end of a heavy 5-2 defeat from Sunderland RCA at the weekend but McLoughlin insists that the scoreline doesn’t tell the full story.
“The team’s been doing well but we’ve had no luck at all. I thought we were the better team on Saturday but we had seven great chances that we couldn’t finish.”
Roofing’s goals at the weekend came courtesy of Olly Martin and Dennis Knight, the duo have been regularly hitting the net of late despite Roofing’s inconsistent run of results with Martin grabbing four goals in his last four games.
This time last season, Martin was turning out for South Shields reserves and will no doubt be relishing the opportunity to show his old club just how much he’s developed after being handed first team opportunities.
“For his first season, Olly has been doing well” McLoughlin said.
“He’s still learning a bit about how the league works but he’s started to pick up some goals to go along with his performances too, which always helps.”
But McLoughlin is under no illusions as to how difficult a task beating South Shields will be. The Mariners have adapted well following their promotion to the Evo-Stik North and are expected to be playing for another promotion at the end of this season.
“The Shields game is a totally different challenge even to the one we faced at the weekend. Obviously it would be nice to win but how do you stop an excellent side like South Shields right from the start?
“We’ll need 110% work-rate from all of our players and we’ll need to be careful with the ball too. It’s going to be very difficult because of the quality players in their team but we’ve got some top players of our own. You never know.”
Roofing will go into this game with a depleted squad yet again as Adam Shanks joins a long list of injured players.
Though new signings Matthew Fisher and Scott McArdle, who signed on from Washington yesterday, may be included in the match day squad.
The game is a 7:30pm kick-off at Mariners Park, on the Beds Industrial Estate behind Tesco.
